Explanatory Note

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority has revised/fixed the prices of 16 formulation packs on August 25, 1999. The prices have been fixed for the first time in the case of 3 packs. In the case of another 3 formulation packs, prices have been revised upwards and the increase ranges from 13.90% to 15.80%, In the case of 10 formulation packs, the prices have been revised downwards and the decrease ranges from 3.81% to 46.98%. Of the 16 formulation packs, ceiling prices have been fixed in respect of 7 packs while non-ceiling prices have been fixed in respect of the remaining 9 packs. The prices have been fixed/revised in accordance with the provisions of the Drugs Price Control Order (DPCO), 1995 and as per the established criteria and guidelines. A copy of the statement showing the existing and revised prices is enclosed herewith.

The formulations for which prices have been revised/fixed are Ventorlin Syrup used for treatment of Asthma, Tetracycline-based formulations used as broad spectrum antibiotic and Vitamin formulations used for deficiency of Vitamins.

NPPA has fixed ceiling prices for Vitamin tablets and capsules in a therapeutic group of Vitamin as prescribed under Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and with the provision of a price adjustment formula. The prices of Vitamin formulations which were sold without government approval will come down as a result of the fixation of the said ceiling price name of some such formulation are Becosole-Z Cap., Becozine Cap., Surbex T Tab., Zenbex Tab., Z and B Cap., Vitazinc Cap., Becosole Plus Cap., Zicomplex Cap., Vitexide Cap., Eldervit, NVM Tab., Winplex Forte Cap., Xenex Forte, Zinvit, Zivinal, E-Zinc, Pro-Z, Zincovit, Sprovit, Zin Forte, Zemin etc.

The prices fixed/revised would become effective within 15 days from the date of notification in the official gazette or the receipt of the order of the NPPA in this behalf, as per Para 14(1) of DPCO, 1995. Necessary revised price list is to be issued by the manufacturers/importers required under sub-paragraph (3) of paragraph 14 of the DPCO, 1995. Accordingly as per the provision, the revised price list in Form-V of the DPCO is to be furnished by the concerned manufacturer to the government and NPPA, State Drug Control Authorities and distributors, wholesaler and retailers or any other agent. The manufacturers are also required to work out the pro-rata prices of different pack sizes as the case may be in terms of S.O. No. 83 (E) dated 27.01.98.
